Overview

An Assam tour package is the easiest way into Northeast India, and for most travellers it is also the most rewarding. Assam sits in the broad valley of the Brahmaputra, one of Asia's great rivers, and almost every journey to the other northeastern states begins in its capital region of Guwahati. Yet Assam is far more than a transit point. It is home to Kaziranga National Park, where roughly two-thirds of the world's greater one-horned rhinoceros live, to Majuli, a vast inhabited river island known for its Vaishnavite monasteries, and to the tea gardens that produce the malty, full-bodied leaf the state is famous for worldwide.

Our Assam tours are designed around what the state does best: wildlife, river life, living culture and history. You can spend dawn on an open jeep in the tall elephant grass of Kaziranga, watch the sun set over the Brahmaputra from a country boat, take part in a mask-making demonstration in a Majuli satra, and walk through the brick pavilions and temples left by the Ahom kings who ruled this valley for six centuries. Evenings are for Assamese thalis, Bihu songs and quiet tea estate bungalows.

Road distances in Assam are long but the highways are good, so we pace every itinerary to avoid more than five or six hours of driving in a day. Most of our Assam packages start and end in Guwahati, with Jorhat and Dibrugarh used as gateways for Upper Assam, Majuli and the eastern rainforests. Assam also combines naturally with Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, and our combo tours appear on each state page they cover.

Places to visit in Assam

Things to do in Assam

Best time to visit Assam

October to April is the best time for an Assam tour. Kaziranga, Manas and Nameri open for safaris in October or November and close by May or June before the monsoon floods. Winter days are dry, clear and pleasant (10–25°C), ideal for wildlife and river cruises.

  • Winter · Nov – Feb

Peak season. Clear skies, cool mornings, excellent rhino and bird sightings. Book safaris early in December and January.

  • Spring · Mar – Apr

Grass is burnt and short, so animal sightings in Kaziranga are often at their best. Rongali Bihu in mid-April.

  • Monsoon · Jun – Sep

National parks close and the Brahmaputra floods. Good for tea gardens, Guwahati temples and Kamakhya's Ambubachi Mela (June).

  • Autumn · Oct

Parks reopen (some ranges in early October), landscapes are green and crowds are thin. Durga Puja season.

How to reach Assam

  • By air

Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and other metros. Jorhat (JRH), Dibrugarh (DIB), Tezpur (TEZ) and Silchar (IXS) airports serve Upper Assam and the Barak Valley.

  • By train

Guwahati is the main rail hub of the Northeast, with Rajdhani and Vande Bharat services. Kamakhya, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and New Tinsukia stations are useful for Upper Assam itineraries.

  • By road

NH27 links Guwahati to Siliguri and the rest of India. Within Assam, NH715 runs from Guwahati towards Kaziranga (about 4.5–5 hours) and Jorhat. Our tours use private vehicles with experienced local drivers.

Permits for Assam

Indian citizens

Indian citizens do not need any permit to visit Assam. Carry a government photo ID. National parks require entry and safari tickets, which we arrange.

Foreign nationals

Foreign nationals do not need a Protected Area Permit for Assam itself. A valid Indian visa and passport are enough. If your trip continues into Arunachal Pradesh or Nagaland, a PAP is required for those states. Permit rules change. Always verify on the official portal before you travel.

About Assam

Wildlife: Kaziranga, Manas and beyond

Assam protects some of the richest wildlife habitat in South Asia. Kaziranga and Manas are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites (inscribed in 1985). Kaziranga is famous for rhinos, wild water buffalo, swamp deer and a high density of tigers, while Manas, on the Bhutan border, shelters rare species such as the pygmy hog and golden langur. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, an easy day trip from Guwahati, has one of the highest rhino densities anywhere. Nameri, Dibru-Saikhowa and Dehing Patkai add river safaris, rainforest walks and superb birdwatching.

Jeep safaris run in the mornings and afternoons inside designated ranges. Elephant-back rides are still offered in some parks; we explain the welfare debate honestly and are happy to plan jeep-only safaris on request.

Satras, temples and the Ahom legacy

Assamese culture is shaped by the neo-Vaishnavite movement founded by the 15th–16th century saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardeva. Its monasteries, called satras, still teach Sattriya dance, devotional music and Bhaona theatre, and the satras of Majuli are among the most important. Guwahati's Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill is one of the most revered Shakti shrines in India.

From the 13th to the early 19th century the Ahom dynasty ruled the Brahmaputra valley. Their capitals around Sivasagar left monuments such as the Rang Ghar pavilion, the Talatal Ghar palace and the Shivadol temple, and the Charaideo Moidams (royal burial mounds) were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024.

Tea, silk and Assamese food

Tea was first commercially cultivated in Assam in the 1830s and today the state produces a large share of India's tea. A night in a heritage tea bungalow around Jorhat or Dibrugarh, with a walk through the bushes and a guided tasting, is one of the gentlest pleasures of an Assam trip. Sualkuchi, near Guwahati, is the centre of Assam's handloom silk, including the golden muga silk unique to the state.

Assamese food is subtle rather than spicy: rice with dal, tangy fish curry (masor tenga), duck with ash gourd, bamboo shoot, and pitha rice cakes during Bihu. We include at least one traditional Assamese meal in every Assam itinerary.

Travel tips

  • Book Kaziranga safari slots well in advance for December–January and long weekends.
  • Carry light layers: winter mornings in open jeeps are cold, afternoons are warm.
  • Majuli's ferries run in daylight only; plan to reach Nimati Ghat by early afternoon.
  • Dress modestly and remove footwear at satras and temples.
  • Most parks close from roughly June to September; check opening dates before booking flights.

Assam travel FAQs

How many days are enough for an Assam tour?

Three to four days covers Guwahati and Kaziranga. Six to seven days lets you add Majuli, Sivasagar and a tea estate stay. If you want Manas or the Upper Assam rainforests as well, plan 8–10 days.

Which is the best time to visit Kaziranga?

November to April. The park usually opens in October (some ranges partly) and closes by May or June. February to April often gives the best rhino sightings because the grass is shorter.

Do I need a permit to visit Assam?

No. Neither Indian citizens nor foreign nationals need a special permit for Assam. You only need park entry and safari tickets, which we book for you.

Can I combine Assam with Meghalaya?

Yes. Shillong is about three hours by road from Guwahati, so an Assam + Meghalaya trip of 6–7 days is our most popular combination.

Is Assam safe for tourists?

Yes. Tourist circuits such as Guwahati, Kaziranga, Majuli and Sivasagar are safe and well established. As anywhere, follow local advice and travel with a registered operator.
