About this experience
Sualkuchi, a short drive from Guwahati, hums with the sound of thousands of handlooms. A guided visit takes you into weavers' homes and workshops to follow the journey of Assam silk from cocoon to cloth. You will see silk being reeled from cocoons, yarn dyed and dried in the sun, warp threads stretched along lanes, and weavers creating intricate motifs on pit and frame looms.
Assam is home to three distinct silks: golden muga, unique to the state and protected by a Geographical Indication tag; lustrous white pat; and warm, matte eri, sometimes called 'peace silk' because the moth is allowed to emerge. The flagship product is the mekhela chador, the elegant two-piece garment worn by Assamese women, often featuring flower, bird and geometric motifs.
Buying directly from weavers supports the craft. Genuine muga is expensive because of the rarity of the silkworm and the labour involved; your guide can help you understand quality and avoid machine-made imitations. Pair the visit with Hajo's temples for a satisfying half day.
