About this experience

The Brahmaputra dominates Assam's landscape and history, and seeing it from the water is unforgettable. In Guwahati, evening sunset cruises depart from the riverfront near Uzan Bazar and Fancy Bazar, gliding past Umananda Island, the Saraighat bridges and the lights of the city while the sun sinks behind the Nilachal hills. Many include tea, snacks, cultural music or dinner on board.

For a deeper experience, multi-day river cruises operate in season between Guwahati, Kaziranga, Majuli and beyond, on comfortable cruise vessels with cabins. Days combine wildlife excursions, satra visits on Majuli and village walks, with evenings spent on deck watching fishermen, sandbanks and river dolphins. These cruises are an elegant, slow way to see Assam without long road drives.

Shorter options include country-boat rides at Majuli, Tezpur and Dibru-Saikhowa, where small motorboats take you along quieter channels. Whatever the format, the best light is in the hour before sunset in winter, when haze softens the horizon.
