About Umananda Island

Umananda, often called Peacock Island, is a small rocky islet in the middle of the Brahmaputra opposite Guwahati's Kachari Ghat, and is frequently described as one of the smallest inhabited river islands in the world. Its main attraction is the Umananda Temple, dedicated to Shiva, built in the late 17th century under the Ahom king Gadadhar Singha and later restored after earthquake damage. The temple's rock-cut carvings and its position above the river give it a special atmosphere.

The short ferry ride is part of the fun. Country boats and small motor ferries cross the fast-flowing river in about ten to fifteen minutes, with views back to Guwahati's skyline and the Saraighat bridges. On the island, a flight of steps leads up through trees to the shrine. Look out for monkeys, and sometimes golden langurs, which were introduced to the island.

Maha Shivaratri in February or March is the island's biggest festival. Otherwise, late afternoon visits combine nicely with a Brahmaputra sunset cruise.
