About Kamakhya Temple

Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill in western Guwahati is one of the most important centres of Shakti worship in India and is counted among the Shakti Peethas. The goddess Kamakhya is worshipped here not as an image but as a natural rock fissure within a dark underground chamber, kept moist by a spring. The present temple was rebuilt in the 16th–17th centuries under the Koch kings, and its beehive-shaped shikhara and sculpted panels make it a striking example of the Nilachal style.

The complex includes temples to the ten Mahavidyas, ghats, and steep stone steps used by pilgrims who climb from the foot of the hill. The temple is busiest during the Ambubachi Mela in June, when it closes for three days and reopens to vast crowds of pilgrims and sadhus. Durga Puja and the spring festival of Basanti Puja are also important.

For travellers, an early-morning visit offers the calmest experience, and the views from the hilltop across the Brahmaputra are excellent. Combine Kamakhya with Umananda Island and a river cruise for a well-rounded Guwahati day.

How to reach Kamakhya Temple

About 8 km from Guwahati city centre and 20 km from the airport. Cars and taxis drive to the top; pilgrims can climb the old stone path.
