About Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is the easiest place to see the greater one-horned rhinoceros from Guwahati. Covering only about 38.8 km² of grassland and wetland on the Brahmaputra floodplain in Morigaon district, it holds an extraordinary density of rhinos — more per square kilometre than almost anywhere else — which is why it has been a source of animals for translocation to Manas and other parks.

Jeep safaris follow short circuits through tall grass and around shallow beels, where rhinos graze in the open and wild water buffalo wallow. The wetlands also attract migratory ducks, storks and waders in winter, making Pobitora rewarding for birdwatchers. Short elephant rides have historically been offered here in season.

Nearby Mayong village, often called the land of black magic for its folk healing traditions, has a small museum on local history and tantric practices. Together they make a good half-day or full-day excursion from Guwahati, or a convenient first stop on the way to Kaziranga.

How to reach Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

About 45–55 km (1.5 hours) east of Guwahati via Jagiroad or Chandrapur. Easily combined with a Kaziranga drive.
