About Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park is the reason many travellers first book an Assam tour. Stretching along the south bank of the Brahmaputra between the river and the Karbi Anglong hills, this mosaic of tall elephant grass, marshy beels and patches of tropical forest protects the largest population of greater one-horned rhinoceros on Earth — more than 2,600 animals at the 2022 census. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 and is also a Tiger Reserve, with one of the highest tiger densities recorded anywhere.

Safaris run in four ranges: Central (Kohora), Western (Bagori), Eastern (Agaratoli) and Burapahar. The Central range is the most popular all-rounder, Western is known for rhino and buffalo sightings, and Eastern is the birders' choice, with pelicans, storks and fish eagles around its wetlands. Besides rhinos, look for wild water buffalo, eastern swamp deer, Asian elephants, hog deer and over 450 bird species.

The park is closed during the monsoon, when floods spread across the grasslands and animals move to higher ground along the hills. Outside the park, the Kaziranga Orchid and Biodiversity Park, tea estates and Karbi and Mising villages make good half-day excursions.

How to reach Kaziranga National Park

Kohora is about 200 km (4.5–5 hours) from Guwahati on NH715. Jorhat airport is about 95 km away. Furkating is the nearest major railway station.

How many days do I need in Kaziranga?

Two nights lets you do three or four safaris across different ranges, which greatly improves your chances of seeing tigers and elephants as well as rhinos.

When is Kaziranga closed?

The park closes during the monsoon, typically from about June to September, and reopens in phases from October.

Can I see tigers in Kaziranga?

Kaziranga has a high tiger density, but the tall grass makes sightings a matter of luck. Rhinos, buffalo, deer and elephants are seen on almost every safari.
