About Nameri National Park

Nameri National Park covers about 200 km² of semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forest in the Himalayan foothills, where the Jia Bhoreli river (the Kameng in Arunachal) emerges onto the Assam plains. It adjoins Pakke Tiger Reserve across the state border, forming a large contiguous habitat for tigers, elephants, leopards and clouded leopards.

Unlike Kaziranga, Nameri is explored mainly on foot and by raft. Guided nature walks with armed forest guards start across the river from Potasali, and gentle rafting trips float about 13–14 km down the clear Jia Bhoreli, with chances of spotting kingfishers, ibisbills in winter, otters and even elephants on the banks. The park is one of the best places in India to see the white-winged wood duck, Assam's state bird, along with great and wreathed hornbills.

Simple eco-camps with tents and cottages on the riverbank make Nameri a peaceful stop between Kaziranga and Arunachal Pradesh. It is also known for catch-and-release mahseer angling in season.

How to reach Nameri National Park

About 35 km from Tezpur and 220 km (5 hours) from Guwahati. Potasali is just off the highway to Bhalukpong.
