About Bhalukpong

Bhalukpong is the first town inside Arunachal Pradesh on the road from Tezpur to Tawang, and its checkpoint is where most visitors present their Inner Line Permits. It sits on the banks of the Kameng river (Jia Bhoreli in Assam), where the foothills rise steeply from the plains, and the river views make it a pleasant first stop.

The area is known for angling, especially catch-and-release fishing for golden mahseer, and for gentle rafting. A few kilometres away, the Tipi Orchid Research Centre displays hundreds of orchid species native to Arunachal, a state known for its exceptional orchid diversity. Bhalukpong also borders Pakke Tiger Reserve, famous for hornbill conservation and for the Pakke Paga Hornbill Festival held each January.

Hot springs, riverside picnic spots and a small fort ruin associated with the legendary king Bhaluka add interest. Many travellers simply pass through, but a night here or at nearby Nameri breaks the long journey to Dirang.

How to reach Bhalukpong

About 60 km (1.5 hours) from Tezpur and 240 km (5–6 hours) from Guwahati. Bhalukpong has a small railway station.
