About this experience

Assam is one of India's great birding destinations, with a range of habitats from floodplain grasslands and wetlands to foothill forests and lowland rainforest. Kaziranga alone has more than 450 recorded species, including the endangered Bengal florican, swamp francolin, Pallas's fish eagle and a host of storks, pelicans and waterfowl in winter. The Eastern range around Agaratoli is particularly good.

Around Guwahati, the Deepor Beel wetland and the city's garbage dumps are among the last strongholds of the greater adjutant stork, an endangered species now protected by local 'Hargila Army' conservationists. Nameri is the best site for the white-winged wood duck and ibisbill, Dibru-Saikhowa and Maguri-Motapung beel host the black-breasted parrotbill and marsh babbler, and Dehing Patkai adds forest specialists and hornbills.

A dedicated birding tour combines several of these sites over 7–10 days, with early starts, specialist local guides and flexible pacing. Even on a general Assam tour, adding an early-morning walk at Nameri or a wetland stop near Guwahati can add dozens of species.
