About Manas National Park

Manas National Park lies in the foothills of the Himalaya where the Manas River flows out of Bhutan into the plains of Assam. Its combination of grasslands, riverine forest and evergreen hills makes it one of the most biologically rich parks in India, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1985), a Tiger Reserve, an Elephant Reserve and a Biosphere Reserve. Across the river, Bhutan's Royal Manas National Park continues the protected landscape.

Manas is the stronghold of several rare species: the pygmy hog, the hispid hare, the Bengal florican and the golden langur all occur here, alongside tigers, elephants, gaur, wild water buffalo and reintroduced rhinos. Its recovery story is remarkable — the park was listed as 'World Heritage in Danger' in 1992 after years of unrest and poaching, and removed from the danger list in 2011 after community-led conservation helped wildlife return.

Most visitors stay near Bansbari or in eco-camps run by former poachers turned protectors. Jeep safaris toward Mathanguri, on the Manas River facing the Bhutan hills, are the highlight, with optional river rafting on calm stretches in season.

How to reach Manas National Park

Bansbari is about 140 km (3.5–4 hours) from Guwahati. Barpeta Road is the nearest railway station (about 20 km).
