About this experience

Assam is one of the largest tea-growing regions in the world, and a night on a working estate is the best way to understand the drink so many of us start the day with. Several historic planters' bungalows around Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Golaghat have been restored as boutique stays, with high ceilings, wide verandas, period furniture and kitchens serving Anglo-Assamese dishes.

A typical stay includes a guided garden walk with an estate manager, explaining shade trees, pruning and the 'two leaves and a bud' that pluckers pick by hand. In season you can watch pluckers at work and visit the factory to see withering, rolling, oxidation and drying, followed by a tasting where you compare orthodox and CTC teas and learn to judge colour, aroma and briskness.

The plucking season runs from about March to November, with prized first and second flushes in spring and early summer. Winter is the pruning season, when factories are quiet but the gardens are peaceful and the weather perfect. A tea stay fits naturally between Kaziranga and Majuli.
