About Dibru-Saikhowa National Park
Dibru-Saikhowa National Park is a riverine wilderness bounded by the Brahmaputra, the Lohit and the Dibru rivers near Tinsukia. Much of it is a shifting island of grassland, semi-evergreen forest and sandbars, explored not by jeep but by motorboat and on foot. It is a biosphere reserve and an Important Bird Area, with more than 350 recorded bird species including the endangered white-winged wood duck and the black-breasted parrotbill, a grassland specialist.
The park is famous for its feral horses, descended from cavalry animals that escaped during World War II, which roam the open grassland in small herds. On the rivers, look for the endangered Ganges river dolphin surfacing in deep channels. Wild buffalo, hoolock gibbons and capped langurs also occur.
Boat trips start from Guijan Ghat, about 10 km from Tinsukia, and visit sandbanks, villages and the famous Maguri Motapung beel, a wetland on the park's edge known for winter waterfowl. It pairs perfectly with Dehing Patkai's rainforest in an Upper Assam itinerary.
How to reach Dibru-Saikhowa National Park
