About Sivasagar

Sivasagar, about 60 km from Jorhat, was the heart of the Ahom kingdom, which ruled the Brahmaputra valley for nearly 600 years from 1228. The town is built around the great Sivasagar tank, dug in the 18th century, on whose banks stand three tall temples. The tallest, Shivadol, was built in 1734 by Queen Ambika, wife of King Siba Singha, and is among the tallest Shiva temples in India.

A short drive away is the Rang Ghar, a two-storey royal pavilion from which Ahom kings watched buffalo fights and Bihu games. First built in bamboo and wood by Rudra Singha, it was rebuilt in brick by Pramatta Singha in the mid-1740s, and its upturned-boat roof has become a symbol of Assam. Nearby, the Talatal Ghar is the largest of the Ahom palaces, a multi-storey brick structure completed under Rajeswar Singha with underground levels and secret passages of local legend. The Kareng Ghar at Garhgaon adds another royal palace to the circuit.

Charaideo, the first Ahom capital about 30 km away, is famous for its moidams (royal burial mounds), inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024. A full day lets you see all of these sites.

How to reach Sivasagar

About 60 km (1.5 hours) from Jorhat airport and 80 km from Dibrugarh. Simaluguri is the nearest railway junction.

Sivasagar FAQs

What is the Rang Ghar?

A royal sports pavilion of the Ahom kings, rebuilt in brick in the 1740s, from which they watched games and buffalo fights during festivals. It is often called one of Asia's oldest surviving amphitheatres.

How much time do I need in Sivasagar?

One full day covers Shivadol, Rang Ghar, Talatal Ghar and Kareng Ghar. Add half a day for the Charaideo Moidams.

Can I combine Sivasagar with Majuli?

Yes. Sivasagar is about 60 km from Jorhat, the gateway to Majuli, so the two fit naturally into an Upper Assam heritage tour.
