About Haflong

Haflong, headquarters of Dima Hasao district, is Assam's only hill station and one of its quietest getaways. The town spreads across forested ridges of the Barail range at around 680 m, with a small lake at its centre and views over rolling blue hills. Its name is often translated from the Dimasa language as 'anthill', a reference to the shape of the hills.

The area is home to the Dimasa people, as well as Zeme Naga, Hmar and Kuki communities, and village walks reveal distinctive architecture and crafts. About 9 km away, the village of Jatinga is famous for a curious phenomenon: on certain foggy, moonless nights in late monsoon, especially in September and October, disoriented birds fly toward lights and fall. Conservation efforts and awareness campaigns now protect these birds, and the site has a watchtower and information centre.

The broad-gauge railway from Lumding to Silchar, with its tunnels and bridges through the Barail hills, is a scenic way to arrive. Haflong is ideal for travellers who want soft adventure — paragliding has been introduced at times — and quiet walks away from busier circuits.

How to reach Haflong

About 330 km (8–9 hours) from Guwahati by road, or by train via Lumding on the scenic hill section. Silchar airport is about 110 km away.
