About Sohra

Sohra, still widely known by its colonial name Cherrapunji, is a small town on a plateau about 55 km south of Shillong. It is famous for its extraordinary rainfall — it once held world records for the most rain in a year and in a month — although nearby Mawsynram now usually receives more. Monsoon clouds rising from the Bangladesh plains hit the escarpment here and drop their rain, carving deep gorges and feeding dozens of waterfalls.

For travellers, Sohra is the base for many of Meghalaya's greatest sights. Nohkalikai Falls, the Seven Sisters Falls, Mawsmai Cave, the Thangkharang Park viewpoint, the Arwah Cave and Wei Sawdong waterfall are all within a short drive, and the road to Tyrna leads to the trailhead for the double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat. The drive from Shillong itself is spectacular, passing the Mawkdok Dympep valley and its zipline.

Sohra is also a historic centre: the Welsh Presbyterian mission established an early base here in the 19th century, and the Khasi script in Roman letters developed in this area. Stay at least one night to see the valleys at sunrise.

How to reach Sohra

About 55 km (1.5 hours) from Shillong and 150 km (4.5 hours) from Guwahati.
