About this experience
Meghalaya's living root bridges are grown, not built: Khasi and Jaintia villagers guide the aerial roots of rubber fig trees across streams until they form strong bridges that last for centuries. Walking to them is one of the most memorable experiences in India.
The classic trek starts at Tyrna village near Sohra and descends roughly 3,500 stone steps through forest and betel-nut groves, crossing two swaying steel suspension bridges over clear blue rivers before reaching Nongriat village and the famous double-decker root bridge. Many trekkers continue another hour to Rainbow Falls and its natural pools, and stay overnight in a Nongriat homestay. The climb back up is the hardest part — take it slowly.
For an easier option, the Riwai root bridge near Mawlynnong is a short walk from the road, and other bridges around Pynursla, Rangthylliang and Mawkyrnot reward those who explore further. Communities collect small fees to maintain the bridges; please stay on the paths and never strip roots or carve names. Our local guides explain how the bridges are grown and maintained.
