About this experience
The Umngot river at Dawki and Shnongpdeng is so clear in the dry season that boats seem to hang in mid-air, their shadows sharp on the pebbled riverbed far below. A boat ride here is one of Meghalaya's signature experiences.
At Dawki, traditional wooden boats rowed by local boatmen take visitors upstream and downstream from the main ghat, passing the 1932 suspension bridge and the forested gorge. Rates are fixed per boat by the local association. At Shnongpdeng, a few kilometres upstream, you can also rent kayaks, go snorkelling over the riverbed and combine boating with cliff jumping and camping.
The clearest water is from about November to April. In the monsoon, the river swells and turns murky, and boating may be suspended. Go early in the day to avoid weekend crowds at Dawki. Life jackets are provided and should always be worn.
