About Umiam Lake

Umiam Lake, often called Barapani ('big water'), is a vast reservoir about 15 km north of Shillong, created in the 1960s when the Umiam river was dammed for hydroelectric power. Its wide blue arms, framed by pine-clad hills, are the first big view travellers see on the drive up from Guwahati, and the lake has become one of Meghalaya's favourite leisure spots.

Viewpoints along the highway are popular for sunset photos. At the Umiam Lake water sports complex and nearby resorts, visitors can try kayaking, speedboats, water scooters and pedal boats, while the Lum Nehru Park offers picnic lawns by the water. Some lakeside properties also offer cycling and ziplining.

Because it lies directly on the route between Guwahati and Shillong, Umiam is usually visited on arrival or departure day. Its sunsets — and morning mist over the water — make it worth a stop of an hour or two.

How to reach Umiam Lake

On NH6, about 15 km (30 minutes) from Shillong and 85 km from Guwahati.
