About Elephant Falls
Elephant Falls, on the outskirts of Shillong about 12 km from the city centre, is one of the easiest waterfalls to visit in Meghalaya. Known in Khasi as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew ('three-step waterfall'), it tumbles through a fern-filled glen in three distinct tiers, each with its own viewpoint reached by steps.
The British renamed it Elephant Falls after a large rock beside the falls that resembled an elephant; the rock was destroyed in an earthquake in 1897, but the name stuck. Today, well-kept paths, railings and bridges make it suitable for families, and the lower falls in particular are a pleasant spot to linger.
The falls are fullest in the monsoon and autumn. In winter the flow is lighter, but the forest setting is still lovely. Elephant Falls is often visited on the way to Shillong Peak, which lies along the same road.
