About Laitlum Canyons
Laitlum, which means 'end of the hills' in Khasi, is a high grassy ridge about 25 km from Shillong where the plateau suddenly drops away into a vast network of forested gorges. Standing on the edge, you look down on rolling ridges, distant waterfalls, and the tiny village of Rasong far below, connected to the rim by a long stone stairway.
The viewpoint is at its most magical at sunrise, when mist fills the valleys and the light catches the ridges, and on clear winter afternoons. In the monsoon, clouds often swallow the view entirely, then part dramatically for a few minutes. Grassy slopes along the rim are popular for picnics and photography.
Hikers can descend the steps toward Rasong, a steep but rewarding walk, and return the same way; allow several hours and go with a guide. Laitlum is close to Smit, seat of the Khyrim Syiemship and venue of the Nongkrem dance festival, and can be combined with Mawphlang in a half-day outing.
