About this experience
The David Scott Trail follows part of a bridle path built in the early 19th century under David Scott, a British administrator, to link the Assam plains with Sylhet (now in Bangladesh) through the Khasi Hills. Today the restored section between Mawphlang and Lad Mawphlang is one of Meghalaya's most scenic day treks.
The trail of roughly 14–16 km descends gradually from the Mawphlang plateau through grassy hills, pine groves and forested valleys, crossing streams and old stone bridges and passing small Khasi villages. Natural pools invite a swim on warm days, and the route offers wide views of the Umiam river gorge. Markers and benches line parts of the path.
Most trekkers start at Mawphlang after visiting the sacred forest and finish at Lad Mawphlang, where vehicles pick them up. It is a moderate walk of 5–7 hours with more downhill than uphill, but sturdy shoes and water are essential. Avoid heavy monsoon days when streams rise.
