About Mawphlang Sacred Forest

The Mawphlang Sacred Forest (Law Lyngdoh) is one of the best-preserved sacred groves in Meghalaya, a dense patch of ancient forest about 25 km from Shillong that has been protected by Khasi tradition for centuries. According to local belief, the forest is guarded by the deity Labasa, and nothing — not even a fallen leaf or twig — may be taken out. As a result, it has become a remarkable refuge of old trees, orchids, ferns, mushrooms and medicinal plants.

Visits are only allowed with local guides from the village, who lead walks of around one to two hours along forest trails and explain Khasi beliefs, rituals and the uses of plants. Inside, you pass moss-covered monoliths and sites where ceremonies were once held.

Just outside the grove is the Khasi Heritage Village, with traditional houses representing different Khasi sub-groups, which hosts cultural events. Mawphlang is also the starting point of the historic David Scott Trail, a scenic trek down through valleys and villages.

How to reach Mawphlang Sacred Forest

About 25 km (1 hour) from Shillong. Can be combined with Laitlum or the David Scott Trail.
