About Mawsmai Cave
Mawsmai Cave, about 6 km from Sohra, is the most accessible of Meghalaya's many limestone caves and a fun introduction to the state's underground world. A short section of the cave, roughly 150 m, is open to visitors and lit with electric lights, guiding you past stalactites, stalagmites and rippled flowstone formed over thousands of years.
The route is mostly easy but has a few tight squeezes and low passages where you need to crouch or turn sideways, which adds to the sense of adventure. Water often drips from the ceiling, so floors can be wet and slippery; wear shoes with good grip. The visit takes around 20–30 minutes.
Mawsmai is part of a karst landscape that includes far longer caves explored by international expeditions. Serious cavers head to the Jaintia Hills, but Mawsmai, together with nearby Arwah Cave and its fossils, is ideal for families and casual travellers. It is just above the Seven Sisters Falls viewpoint and the Eco Park.
