About this experience

Some of India's most dramatic roads climb through Arunachal Pradesh. The classic route from the Assam plains to Tawang rises from about 200 m at Bhalukpong through subtropical forest, over Bomdila's ridge, down into Dirang's valley and then up to Sela Pass at around 4,170 m before descending to Tawang. In two days you pass through every climate zone from tropical to alpine.

From Tawang, the road to Bum La (around 4,600 m) for Indian citizens passes frozen lakes, army camps and Madhuri (Shungatser) Lake. Further east, the roads to Mechuka, Anini via Mayudia Pass, and the Lohit valley toward Walong offer similarly epic scenery with far fewer travellers.

We use experienced local drivers in sturdy SUVs, plan realistic daily distances and build in time for photo stops at viewpoints, waterfalls and memorials. Mountain weather changes fast, and roads may be affected by snow, landslides or convoys, so flexibility is part of the adventure. Altitude awareness matters: stop briefly at high passes and descend if you feel unwell.

High-Altitude Drives & Passes FAQs

Is the road to Tawang safe?

Yes, with an experienced local driver. Delays from weather or roadworks are common, so allow buffer time.

Do I need a 4x4?

Not usually for Tawang, but a sturdy SUV with good ground clearance is recommended; 4x4 helps in snow and on remote routes.

How do I avoid altitude sickness?

Acclimatise at Dirang, keep stops at passes short, stay hydrated and avoid alcohol on the first high day.
