About Bum La Pass
Bum La is a high mountain pass at about 4,600 m (15,200 ft) on the border between India and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, around 37 km from Tawang. It is one of the designated border personnel meeting points between the two armies, and historically was one of the routes by which the 14th Dalai Lama came into India in 1959. During the 1962 war Chinese forces advanced through this area.
For civilians, the attraction is the journey and the sense of standing at the edge of the country. The road climbs through a stark, rocky landscape dotted with frozen lakes and army posts, often under snow even in spring. At the pass, soldiers usually give a short briefing on the history of the border, and visitors can see the boundary markers and the surrounding peaks.
Visits are tightly controlled. Only Indian citizens may go, a special pass must be obtained in Tawang a day in advance, and photography of military installations is prohibited. The route can close without notice due to weather or security, so treat it as a bonus rather than a guarantee.
How to reach Bum La Pass
