About Ziro Valley

Ziro Valley is a broad, flat plateau at around 1,500–1,600 m in Lower Subansiri district, ringed by pine- and bamboo-covered hills. It is the homeland of the Apatani people, whose wet-rice cultivation combined with fish farming in the same flooded fields is so efficient and sustainable that the 'Apatani Cultural Landscape' has been placed on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list.

Apatani villages such as Hong, Hija, Bulla and Hari are compact clusters of bamboo-and-timber houses on stilts, with tall ritual poles (babos) and clan platforms (lapangs). Older women may still bear the traditional facial tattoos and large nose plugs once common among the Apatani; the practice ended decades ago. Village walks with a local guide are the best way to understand Apatani customs, the Donyi-Polo faith and festivals such as Myoko (March) and Dree (July).

Beyond the villages, Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary offers forest treks, and the Kile Pakho ridge gives panoramic views. Ziro is best known nationally for the Ziro Festival of Music, held in late September in open fields — but the valley's calm beauty is just as appealing the rest of the year.

How to reach Ziro Valley

About 110 km (3–4 hours) from Itanagar and 100 km from North Lakhimpur in Assam. Naharlagun is the nearest railway station; Donyi Polo Airport (Itanagar) is about 120 km away.
