About this experience

Just outside Dirang town, natural hot springs bubble up near the river and have been channelled into simple bathing pools. Locals have used them for generations, believing the sulphur-rich water eases joint pain and skin complaints, and after a long day's drive in the mountains a soak here is very welcome.

The setting is rustic rather than luxurious: small concrete or stone pools, changing areas and a path down from the road, with views of the forested valley. Mornings are quietest. Bring a towel and modest swimwear, and follow local custom and any separate bathing timings.

A visit fits easily into a rest day at Dirang, together with Dirang Dzong, the Kalachakra gompa, the yak research centre at Nyukmadung and the kiwi orchards and apple farms of the valley. In winter, birders may combine it with a trip to Sangti Valley for black-necked cranes.
