About Mokokchung
Mokokchung is the cultural and intellectual centre of the Ao Naga tribe, set on a ridge in north-central Nagaland at about 1,300 m. It is a lively, well-educated town where the American Baptist missionaries first established Christianity among the Nagas in the 19th century, at nearby Molungkimong (Molung).
Just 3 km from town is Ungma, considered the oldest and largest Ao village and often described as a living museum of Ao traditions. Its carved log drums, ceremonial gates and traditional houses provide insight into Ao history and the village's role in Ao origin stories. Longkhum, a scenic village about 17 km away, is linked to Ao legends and offers fine views.
Mokokchung is busiest in early May for Moatsu, the Ao festival celebrated after sowing, and in late July for Tsungremong. It is a useful stopover on a longer Nagaland itinerary between Kohima and Mon, or reached from Jorhat in Assam.
How to reach Mokokchung
About 120 km (4 hours) from Jorhat airport in Assam via Amguri, or 150 km (5–6 hours) from Kohima.
