About Longwa Village
Longwa is one of the most fascinating villages in India. This large Konyak village sits on a ridge right on the international border with Myanmar, and the boundary line runs straight through the house of its chief, the Angh. According to local lore, the Angh eats in India and sleeps in Myanmar, and villagers have long moved freely on both sides.
The Angh of Longwa traditionally rules over dozens of villages, some of which lie in Myanmar. His long house is decorated with mithun skulls, hornbill carvings and old trophies, and visitors can often meet members of the family. Longwa's elders, some of whom still bear facial tattoos, share stories of a past very different from today.
Beyond the cultural encounters, the setting is beautiful: green ridges, small lakes and views into Myanmar's hills. Simple homestays in the village allow an overnight stay. Fencing of the border has been proposed in recent years, which may affect access, so always check the current situation before travelling.
