About Kachari Ruins, Dimapur

The Kachari Rajbari Ruins in the heart of Dimapur are the remains of the capital of the Dimasa Kachari kingdom, which ruled much of the region before it was sacked by the Ahom in the 16th century. The most striking features are rows of mushroom-domed sandstone pillars, some several metres tall, standing in a small park.

The pillars are carved with geometric patterns, flowers, animals and birds, and their exact purpose is still debated by historians; many believe they were memorial or ritual stones. Nearby are the remains of a brick gateway and walls of the old fortified city. Dimapur's name is often linked to the Dimasa phrase for 'city near the great river'.

The ruins take less than an hour to see and make an easy introduction to the region's history on arrival in Dimapur. Combine them with Dimapur's markets, the Triple Falls at Seithekema, or Chumoukedima before heading up to Kohima.
