About Touphema Tourist Village
Touphema (Tuophema) is an Angami village about 40 km north of Kohima that pioneered community-based tourism in Nagaland. In 2001 the villagers, with government support, built a tourist village of cottages designed in traditional Angami style — one for each of the village's khels (clans) — on a hilltop with sweeping views.
Staying here offers an authentic glimpse of rural Naga life. Guests can visit the village museum with its collection of artefacts and traditional tools, watch cultural performances arranged on request, sample Angami food such as smoked pork with bamboo shoot, and walk through terraced fields and village paths. During festivals such as Sekrenyi (February), the village is especially lively.
Touphema is a peaceful alternative to staying in Kohima and a good base for exploring the Angami heartland. The road from Kohima follows ridgetops with fine views.
How to reach Touphema Tourist Village
