About Japfu Peak

Mount Japfü, at 3,048 m, is the second-highest peak in Nagaland and the dominant mountain on Kohima's skyline. Part of the Barail range, it rises between Kohima and the Dzukou Valley, and its summit gives sweeping views over the Naga hills and, on clear days, toward the Himalaya far to the north.

The usual approach starts from Kigwema village near Kisama, climbing steadily through dense forest of oak, rhododendron and bamboo. The forest is famous: Japfu holds the Guinness World Record for the tallest rhododendron tree, measured at about 20 m in 1993. In spring (March–April) rhododendrons bloom in red and pink along the trail.

Most trekkers start in the early hours to reach the top for sunrise, a climb of around 4–5 hours. It is a steep, demanding day hike rather than a technical climb. Japfu can also be combined with Dzukou Valley on a multi-day trek. Go with a local guide, as trails are not always clear.

How to reach Japfu Peak
