About Dzukou Valley
Dzukou Valley is Nagaland's most famous trek and one of the most beautiful landscapes in Northeast India. Lying at about 2,450 m on the border of Nagaland and Manipur, behind Japfu peak, it is a wide valley of rounded green hills covered in dwarf bamboo, with clear streams meandering across the valley floor. From a distance the bamboo looks like a smooth carpet of grass.
In the monsoon the valley blooms with flowers, most famously the Dzukou lily (Lilium chitrangadae), which is endemic to the area and flowers around June and July. In autumn the hills turn gold, and in winter frost often covers the meadows in the morning. Sunrise and sunset from the ridges are spectacular.
Most trekkers walk in from Viswema, a gentle climb of around 8 km through forest to the ridge, followed by a descent toward the rest house. The shorter Zakhama route is steeper. The government rest house offers dormitories and basic rooms, and camping is allowed in designated areas. Please carry all your waste out — the valley's beauty depends on it.
How to reach Dzukou Valley
Drive about 25 km from Kohima to Viswema (or Zakhama) trailhead, then trek 3–5 hours to the rest house.
