About Namdapha National Park
Namdapha National Park in Changlang district is one of the largest protected areas in India and the largest in the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot, covering nearly 2,000 km². Its altitude range is extraordinary — from about 200 m in the Noa-Dihing river valley to over 4,500 m at Dapha Bum — giving it everything from tropical rainforest to alpine meadows.
Namdapha is the only park in India known to hold four big cat species: tiger, leopard, clouded leopard and snow leopard. It is also home to the hoolock gibbon, red panda, Namdapha flying squirrel and an exceptional list of birds, including hornbills, wren-babblers and the white-bellied heron. Wildlife is shy and the forest dense, so Namdapha suits patient nature lovers more than casual sightseers.
Visitors enter from Miao, where there is a small museum and mini-zoo, and drive about 25 km to the forest camp at Deban on the Noa-Dihing river. From there, guided treks lead to Haldibari, Bulbulia and Firmbase. Accommodation is basic but beautifully set.
How to reach Namdapha National Park
Miao is about 140 km (4 hours) from Dibrugarh via Margherita and Jagun. Deban is a further 25 km inside the park.
